Gail was a Leslie Jr high girl who I met as a sophomore at South. We must have had a class together and we developed a close friendship over the years. I only asked her out on a date once, to join my grade school friend Eric Paulson and I and my girlfriend Marcia Morgan ’71 to a winter formal dance and dinner out. She attended OSU and met her future husband John Bachmeier their freshman year. She quit school and worked her sophomore or junior year. I lived with John my junior year, and when John worked in Salem that summer I lived with Gail that summer before my senior year in Corvallis. I attended summer term and worked to get enough credits in my major to graduate on time. Gail and John got married but it lasted only a couple of years. Gail and I kept in touch and exchanged Christmas cards and calls until her death 12-15 years ago. Gail was a diabetic and she told me later she should have respected it more and she wouldn’t have had such early kidney failure. She received a kidney transplant from her father Bob a retired Marine ten years before her death of a heart attack. She had been for many years in shoreside administration in the cruise ship industry in Florida. She died at the stable where she rode horses, a lifetime enjoyment. At her memorial her mother said to me, “ I always thought you and Gail would get together”, that was very touching and flattering, We were just very good friends, and the only close friend who was a girl from high school. greg pilcher
